A major Victorian business group is calling for changes to the state’s proposed work-from-home laws, including delaying their introduction and limiting the entitlement to two days per week.
The Victorian Congress of Employer Associations has urged the government to postpone the planned start date from 1 September to 1 March next year, saying businesses need more time to prepare.
The proposed laws would give most Victorian workers the right to request working from home up to two days a week, where the arrangement is considered reasonable. Employers would have 21 days to respond to written requests.
The business group argues the current timeline would place pressure on employers to update policies, train managers and understand new workplace obligations in a short period.
It is also calling for a staged rollout for smaller businesses, rather than a single deadline.
The Victorian Government says the changes are designed to provide greater flexibility for workers and estimates they could save employees an average of $5,308 per year through reduced commuting and related costs.
