At least 160 people have died and hundreds remain missing after devastating flash floods swept through villages along the Nepal–Tibet border.
Satellite images suggest the flooding may have been triggered by a large section of Himalayan glacier ice breaking away and sending huge amounts of ice and debris into a river.
Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong said officials were urgently trying to confirm the safety of at least 34 Australians reported missing. They were travelling as part of separate pilgrimage and tour groups.

The flooding has caused widespread destruction, with reports that entire villages and market areas have been washed away.
Meanwhile, international experts have warned of the possibility of another major flood, as a blockage remains upstream in a key river along the Nepal–Tibet border.
Authorities continue search and rescue efforts as concerns grow over further flooding and the fate of those still missing.
