Sri Lanka is set to receive a US$1 million World Bank grant to help prepare a new project aimed at strengthening nature-based tourism.
The 18-month grant will support the preparation of the THRIVE–Nature (Tourism for Heritage, Resilience, Inclusion and Value-driven Employment) project.
The initiative will focus on improving tourism destinations and developing nature-based infrastructure, with the goal of increasing the economic benefits of tourism.
Although Sri Lanka has strong potential for nature tourism, revenue growth has remained relatively slow compared with the rise in tourist arrivals.
The proposed project will also build on programmes introduced through the World Bank-funded Ecosystem Conservation and Management Project.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the acceptance of the grant and the use of the funding to prepare the THRIVE–Nature project.
