Australian toll operator considers dynamic pricing for motorists

Australia could consider a dynamic toll pricing system that changes road charges according to traffic demand, a senior Transurban executive says.
Unlike current peak-hour tolls, which apply during set periods, dynamic pricing would allow tolls to rise or fall throughout the day depending on traffic levels.
Transurban Victoria general manager Anup Jois said the company already uses the model in the United States and believes it could potentially work in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Under the US system, sensors monitor traffic speed and congestion to determine the toll motorists pay.
Transurban is the operator and part-owner of most major toll roads in Australia. The company recorded about $4 billion in revenue last financial year, with around 90 per cent coming from its Australian operations.
Sydney generated the largest share, with toll revenue rising 4.4 per cent to $1.9 billion. Melbourne revenue increased 9 per cent to more than $1.07 billion, while Brisbane revenue rose 4.9 per cent to $633 million.
The proposal would represent a significant change for Australian motorists, with toll prices potentially changing based on real-time congestion rather than fixed peak periods.
