Veteran Sri Lankan Singer Nanda Malini Passes Away

Veteran Sri Lankan singer Nanda Malini has died at the age of 82, according to family sources. She passed away at her home in Nawala.
Born on August 23, 1943, in Lewanduwa, Aluthgama, Nanda Malini showed her musical talent from an early age and went on to become one of Sri Lanka’s most respected vocalists.
She began her musical journey after moving to Colombo as a teenager. Her teacher, T. N. Margaret Perera, introduced her to Radio Ceylon, where she performed the song “Budu Sadu” on Karunaratne Abeysekera’s popular programme Lama Mandapaya.
She later continued her formal music education under B. Victor Perera and studied at the Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow, India. She subsequently earned her Visharada degree in 1984.
Over a career spanning decades, Nanda Malini received 11 Sarasaviya Awards and eight Presidential Awards for Best Singer.
Her extensive musical legacy includes works such as Perada Maha Re, Pahan Kanda, Sathyaye Geethaya, Hemanthayedi, Tharuka Es, Pavana, Sindu Hodiya, Kinduriyakage Vilapaya, Madhu Bandun, Tharu and Yathra.
Her songs often explored love, family, human relationships, social realities and women’s experiences, giving her music a distinctive emotional depth.
Songs including “Pipunu Male Ruwa,” “Sudu Hamine,” “Kada Mandiye” and “Manda Nawa Karanawa” remain among her memorable works.
Nanda Malini leaves behind an extraordinary musical legacy that has shaped generations of Sri Lankan listeners.
