Sri Lanka is preparing to introduce a fully digital system for paying traffic fines from September, allowing motorists to settle fines for motor vehicle offences through online platforms.
The system is part of the government’s wider digital transformation programme. Officials say the necessary arrangements are already in place for the new payment process.
The move was discussed at a progress review meeting on the Ministry of Digital Economy’s 2026 projects, chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat.
The meeting also reviewed plans to introduce Sri Lanka’s Digital National Identity Card later this year.
The President has instructed officials to expand information technology services across the public sector. The aim is to improve digital services, strengthen government institutions and make public services more efficient.
The new traffic fine system is expected to be another major step towards reducing paperwork and moving Sri Lanka’s public services further into the digital era.
