The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has come out swinging against fake news doing the rounds online. According to these false claims, the age at which Aussies can access their super is going up from 60 to 70 starting next month.
The ATO has confirmed the current access age of 60 stays exactly the same, and there are no plans to change it.
Deputy Commissioner Emma Rosenzweig called the rumours "classic fake news", and reminded Australians to always double-check what they read online.
“Always consider the source of the information you see,” she said. “If in doubt, go straight to trusted sources like the ATO website, your super fund, or speak to a registered tax agent or licensed financial adviser.”
She also issued a warning about websites that might try to harvest your personal info — including your TFN, myGov details, or identity info.
“Think twice before acting on information from third-party sources — especially unofficial websites or social media.”
The ATO is also urging people to be cautious about anyone offering “free expert tax advice” — unless they’re registered with the Tax Practitioners Board or a qualified lawyer, they probably shouldn’t be giving you tax advice.
Bottom line: don’t believe the hype, and always check with official sources before making decisions about your money or your super.
