Origin Energy has revealed that up to 60 customers had their full bank account numbers accessed during a major cyberattack in July.
The breach affected around 900,000 current and former customers. Information accessed included names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and other personal details.
For some customers, the stolen information also included the last four digits of a credit card or the last three digits of a bank account.
Origin said information linked to government concession programs was also accessed, affecting about 15,000 customers.
The company said it has largely completed its investigation into the data involved and is contacting affected customers. CEO Frank Calabria said the criminal investigation remains underway.
Authorities have reportedly traced the attack to a call centre in the Philippines. The investigation has also linked the incident to a former Accenture employee in Manila. Accenture operates call centres for Origin.
Origin said there is currently no evidence that customer information has been publicly leaked or disclosed.
The breach was first reported after a sample of 50 customer records was provided to the company. The incident is believed to be the largest known cyberattack involving an Australian energy retailer.
Origin has urged affected customers to remain alert while investigations and notifications continue.
