Parts of New South Wales are bracing for wild weather as thunderstorms roll in, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and even the chance of large hail. The storms have already swept through areas like Terrigal, Gosford, and Lake Macquarie, with dark clouds and rain now making their way to Sydney's north, including suburbs like Pymble, Mosman, and Hornsby.
The forecast predicts the weather will worsen throughout the day, spreading to places like Berry, Camden, and Kiama. Yesterday, similar storms hit Victoria, South Australia, and parts of southwestern NSW. Now, severe thunderstorms are expected across large areas of NSW and Queensland, with heavy rain likely to bring 30mm to 60mm for most, and up to 100mm in some spots.
For Sydney residents, the main concern is the potential for intense rainfall lasting through tomorrow. There’s also a risk of damaging winds and large hail. Areas like the Mid North Coast, Hunter, and Illawarra regions are also in the firing line.
Acting State Emergency Service (SES) Commissioner Greg Swindells is urging everyone to prepare. “Clear your gutters, trim trees and bushes near your home, and secure or move any loose items that could be blown around,” he advised. Swindells also reminded drivers not to attempt driving through floodwaters.
While NSW has been sweltering in heatwave conditions, relief is on the way. Temperatures are expected to drop to the mid-20s by Friday and stay cooler over the weekend. By Sunday, the central and southern NSW coast should see the rain ease, but it’s not over just yet—more rain is expected to return later.
Stay safe and keep an eye on the weather!
