Jetstar is flying to Sri Lanka for the first time today

Jetstar has launched its first direct service between Melbourne and Colombo, becoming the first Australian airline to operate the route.
The inaugural flight departed Melbourne at 12.30pm on Tuesday on a refurbished Boeing 787. The flight takes about 10 hours and 20 minutes.
The return service leaves Colombo at 7.50pm and reaches Melbourne the following morning after about 9 hours and 40 minutes.
Jetstar will operate the route three times a week Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the year. The new service is expected to provide more than 100,000 seats annually between Melbourne and Colombo.
Jetstar CEO Steph Tully said strong early demand was expected, particularly given Victoria’s large Sri Lankan community.
Travel experts say the new service could further boost tourism between Australia and Sri Lanka.
Visitors are being encouraged to explore destinations including Sigiriya, Ella, Galle, Yala, Nuwara Eliya, the Knuckles Mountain Range and Jaffna, while experiencing Sri Lankan food and cultural attractions.
Travellers are also advised to plan carefully. Although Sri Lanka is relatively compact, travelling between destinations can take longer than expected.
Experts recommend choosing accommodation based on location and the type of experience offered, rather than price alone. They also advise checking seasonal weather patterns when selecting between Sri Lanka’s southern and eastern beaches.
