Free Public Transport for VIC & TAS;NSW Sticks to Stated Rates.

The New South Wales Government has decided not to introduce free public transport, despite rising fuel costs putting pressure on households.
State Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the move would be too costly and not a quick fix. He noted the government is monitoring the situation but won’t rush into what he called an expensive short-term decision.
Transport Minister John Graham also confirmed free travel is off the table for now, saying the impact of the current crisis could last longer than a few weeks. He stressed the need to preserve funds for broader economic support.
The decision means NSW commuters miss out on relief already announced elsewhere. Victoria is offering free public transport for a month, while Tasmania has introduced three months of fare-free travel.
Officials say cutting the fuel excise could provide more meaningful relief, but that decision sits with the federal government.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to meet with state leaders again to coordinate a national response to the fuel crisis.
