In a brand-new deal with the state, Hong Kong Airlines will be landing at Melbourne Airport for the very first time, with three A330 flights a week starting this December. Planes will depart for Hong Kong on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays — adding a whopping 93,000 extra seats a year on the route.
Until now, that route’s been mostly dominated by Qantas and Cathay Pacific, so this is a big boost for competition — and for travellers.
“This is a real shot in the arm for the Victorian economy,” said Victorian Finance Minister Danny Pearson. “And it’s a big vote of confidence in this city and state. More choice, more options — that’s great news for consumers.”
And the timing couldn’t be better.
Melbourne Airport just had its busiest international travel year ever — nearly 11.9 million international passengers, up more than 8%. Of those, 88,000 came from Hong Kong, injecting $214 million into Victoria’s economy. By 2029, that number’s expected to jump to 148,300.
“For anyone arriving into Melbourne, they know we’re bursting at the seams,” said Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus. “And come December, when these new flights start showing up on the board, they’ll open up connections to over 30 destinations, including Tokyo and Vancouver.”
Oh, and that’s not all — Delta Air Lines is also launching direct flights from Melbourne to the US in December too.
“December is shaping up to be a very busy time,” Argus added. “But it always is around Christmas!”
