Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Strikes Off South Australian Coast

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake was recorded off the coast of South Australia this morning, with tremors felt across a wide area.
The earthquake occurred at 7.48am, around 100 kilometres offshore. More than 700 people reported feeling the shaking, mainly in Adelaide, with reports extending as far north as Kapunda and south to Beachport.
Seismologist Jonathan Bathgate described the earthquake as significant, given how widely it was felt across the region.
He warned that aftershocks could occur over the coming days. While these are generally expected to be smaller and less frequent, stronger tremors cannot be ruled out.
Authorities have confirmed there is no tsunami risk from the earthquake.
The region’s most significant recent earthquake was a magnitude 5.6 event in 1946. It occurred closer to the coast and caused damage in the coastal town of Robe.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as residents are advised to remain aware of possible aftershocks.
