SriLankan Airlines Eyes New Routes to Perth, China and Africa

SriLankan Airlines is considering expanding its international network to Perth, China and Africa as part of efforts to support the country’s tourism industry.
Chief Executive Officer Vipu Misra said the national carrier sees strong potential in these markets and has a key role in developing new air connections to Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the media, Misra highlighted growing interest in Perth following a recent tourism roadshow organised with the Tourism Ministry. He also said services to China need to be resumed and additional flight capacity deployed.
The airline is also looking at restoring routes to Africa, which have been discontinued for years. However, expanding into these markets would require additional aircraft, potentially sourced from external operators.
Misra said some routes might not attract enough passengers to be commercially attractive at the beginning. However, he argued that the national carrier must help establish connections that could support tourism and bring more transit passengers through Colombo.
He noted that other airlines could enter these markets once demand grows and the routes become more profitable.
The proposed expansion reflects SriLankan Airlines’ ambition to strengthen Sri Lanka’s international connectivity and support long-term growth in tourism. However, the plans remain under consideration, with additional aircraft needed to move forward.
