Sydney’s Western Sydney Airport Opens to International Flights

Sydney’s new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) has officially begun international operations, with Air New Zealand operating the first international departure to Auckland.
Flight NZ166 was scheduled to leave at 8.55am, following the arrival of flight NZ165 from Auckland shortly after 7.30am. The milestone marks a major step in expanding Sydney’s aviation network, particularly for communities in the city’s west.
Located in Luddenham, the new airport offers an alternative to Sydney’s existing airport. The journey from the city centre took around 51 minutes in the early morning, although travel times could increase during peak traffic. An Uber ride cost $126.96, while the airport’s direct metro connection is not expected to open until December 2027.
The airport’s modern terminal features shared check-in facilities, automated passport control and baggage drop services. Early visitors also noted spacious seating areas, accessible amenities and a dedicated pet relief area.
However, some facilities were still being prepared for opening day. Food options were limited, with cheese toasties priced at $14.99 and salads at $17.99. A planned bar and restaurant was not yet ready to open.
Despite the limited number of flights operating initially, the launch attracted aviation enthusiasts and travellers eager to be part of the historic occasion. Airport staff welcomed passengers with souvenir cookies, water bottles and lamingtons.
The first international service followed the airport’s first domestic departure on Sunday, when a Jetstar flight left for the Gold Coast. The flight attracted widespread attention on FlightRadar24 as aviation enthusiasts tracked the historic journey.
Western Sydney International Airport is expected to improve access to air travel for millions of residents in Sydney’s western suburbs. Its opening marks a significant development in Australia’s aviation infrastructure, with further growth expected as more airlines and services join the network.
