Sri Lanka proposes roadworthiness tests every 5,000km or three months

Sri Lanka is considering mandatory roadworthiness tests for vehicles every 5,000 kilometres or approximately every three months under a proposed plan to improve road safety.
Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) Commissioner General, retired Air Marshal Thushara Fernando, said the proposal is still under review and has been referred to the department’s legal division. The system could be introduced early next year.
The proposed checks would be conducted alongside the existing vehicle emissions tests. Authorities have also called for applications from garages interested in carrying out the inspections. Approved garages will be selected based on specific requirements.
The proposal was put forward by the Minister’s advisers, with officials now examining the legal and administrative steps needed to implement it.
The move comes amid renewed concerns about road safety following a major accident in Akurana. However, the testing requirements and implementation arrangements have not yet been finalised.
