Melbourne named among world’s best travel destinations for 2027

Melbourne has earned a place on National Geographic’s list of the world’s best travel destinations, further strengthening its reputation as one of Australia’s leading cities.
The list features 25 destinations across six continents, selected by National Geographic’s international network of writers, photographers and explorers.
Melbourne was recognised for its thriving arts and sports scenes, lively neighbourhoods and diverse food culture. The publication noted that the Victorian capital is increasingly attracting international attention, despite Sydney traditionally drawing more visitors.
The recognition adds to a growing list of international accolades for Melbourne. It was recently named the world’s friendliest city in Condé Nast Traveller’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards. The city also ranked third globally in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index, making it Australia’s most liveable city.
Melbourne was also named the world’s best city by Time Out in 2026, while South Melbourne was included in the publication’s list of the world’s 40 coolest neighbourhoods. South Melbourne Market, along with the area’s cafés and restaurants, received particular praise.
Other destinations featured on National Geographic’s list include Niigata in Japan, Chile’s Cape Froward, Scotland’s Dumfries and Galloway region, and California’s Pacific Coast Highway.
The latest recognition highlights Melbourne’s growing appeal as an international destination for culture, sport, food and urban experiences.
