Australia Post is seeking approval to raise the price of a standard stamp by 15 cents, lifting the basic postage rate from $1.70 to $1.85 from mid-year.
The proposal has been submitted to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for review.
If approved, concession stamps will remain at 60 cents, and seasonal greeting stamps will stay at 65 cents. Australia Post also plans to expand cost-of-living support by increasing the number of concession stamps eligible customers can buy each year from 50 to 75.
The postal service says the impact on households will be minimal — estimated at less than $1 extra per year on average. Fewer than three per cent of letters are sent by individuals, with most mail coming from businesses and government agencies.
Letter volumes continue to decline sharply, now sitting at levels last seen in the 1930s. In the past financial year, volumes fell by 11.7 per cent (excluding election mail). Even including election-related deliveries, the letters business recorded a $230.4 million loss.
Australia Post says the price increase is part of efforts to keep the traditional mail service financially sustainable as more customers switch to digital communication.
