Australian authorities have uncovered the country’s largest-ever cocaine seizure, with 2.7 tonnes of the drug found hidden in an underground storage system in western Sydney.
The cocaine, estimated to have a street value of around $816 million, was discovered inside three shipping containers at a property in Londonderry. Police say the drugs were concealed beneath false floors.
Two men, aged 21 and 25, were arrested at the scene after allegedly attempting to escape. They have been charged with possessing a large quantity of an illegally imported border-controlled drug and remain in custody.
Police allege the cocaine was brought into Australia through Midge Point in North Queensland as part of an organised crime operation.
The discovery is linked to Operation Minjiang, which began after 40 kilograms of cocaine was found floating near a boat ramp in Midge Point. Further arrests have since been made in Queensland and NSW, while a suspected smuggling vessel has also been detained overseas.
Australian Federal Police said the scale of the operation shows the lengths criminal networks will go to in order to move illegal drugs.
Investigations are continuing as authorities work with domestic and international agencies to identify those involved in the alleged trafficking network.
