Aussie tourist hotspot considers new visitor tax proposal

New Zealand is considering a nationwide visitor accommodation levy to help fund tourism infrastructure and support long-term growth in popular destinations.
The proposal comes from Regional Tourism New Zealand, which represents 31 regional tourism organisations. The group says the levy could provide extra funding for projects such as infrastructure upgrades, events and community facilities.
Chair Andrew Wilson said the funds would help regions better manage tourism growth and maintain the quality of experiences visitors enjoy.
Under the proposal, money collected would be reinvested directly into the regions where it is generated. It would also be designed to complement, not replace, existing council funding.
If introduced, New Zealand would join other major tourism destinations, including parts of Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States, that already use visitor charges.
The move follows similar steps in places such as Kyoto, Japan, which introduced additional accommodation fees to manage tourism pressures.
