Ahmed Al Ahmed has been formally presented with a novelty cheque for more than $2.5 million, raised by over 43,000 donors worldwide after his brave actions during the Bondi terror attack.
The funds were handed to Ahmed at St George Hospital by Canadian content creator Zachery Dereniowski, who helped organise the GoFundMe appeal. The campaign drew support from high-profile donors, including billionaire investor Bill Ackman, comedian Amy Schumer and Australian artist Kid Laroi.
Ahmed, who was recovering in his hospital bed, appeared surprised by the gesture and asked if he deserved it. He was told the support was “every penny earned”.
Speaking briefly, Ahmed urged unity and compassion, saying he acted from the heart to protect families who were peacefully celebrating Hanukkah. He described Australia as a country worth standing up for and called for people to support one another.
Vision of Ahmed confronting and disarming one of the attackers spread rapidly online and has been credited with saving more than 30 lives. The incident turned the Sutherland Shire business owner into an overnight symbol of courage.
Ahmed has since undergone several surgeries for gunshot wounds and faces a lengthy recovery. He has received visits from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns, while family members remain by his side.
Outside his closed shop, locals have left flowers, notes and children’s drawings thanking him for his bravery. One message reads: “We are so very proud of you.”
