Weather Forces Flight Cancellations Between Brisbane and Sydney

Strong winds and wild weather have thrown travel plans into chaos today, with nine domestic flights between Brisbane and Sydney cancelled — and dozens more grounded across the country.
The main culprit? A massive “bomb cyclone” off the coast of NSW that’s been causing havoc across the region.
The Bureau of Meteorology clocked wind gusts up to 81 km/h at Brisbane Airport — the strongest July gust recorded there in 26 years!
This storm system is no ordinary cold front. It’s a rapidly intensifying coastal low-pressure system, often referred to as a bomb cyclone, packing wind gusts up to 125 km/h, heavy rain, flood risks, and coastal erosion from dangerous surf conditions.
So far, it’s led to:
55+ flights grounded across Australia
Train suspensions in storm-hit areas
Power outages impacting tens of thousands of homes and businesses
And widespread travel delays, especially around NSW airports.
If you’re flying today or tomorrow, especially in or out of Sydney, it’s best to check directly with your airline. Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and others are already rebooking passengers affected by the weather.
What’s ahead?
Winds in southeast Queensland are expected to start easing later Thursday, dropping to around 50–60 km/h.
The weekend looks calmer, with milder temps around 23°C and a few showers.
NSW, however, will continue to feel the brunt of the storm a bit longer, with flood and wind warnings in place until the system moves further into the Tasman Sea.
If you’re near the coast in NSW, stay alert to weather warnings, and if you’re travelling — especially by air — expect delays and disruptions, and stay in touch with your airline.
