A terrifying scene unfolded this morning on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, after a helicopter crashed into the water just off Point Lonsdale.
The chopper went down around 10am, crashing about 30 metres from the rocks. Incredibly, all three people onboard managed to make it to shore. A passerby spotted them and immediately called triple zero for help.
Emergency services arrived quickly, and all three passengers were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. A man and woman were airlifted, while another man was taken by ambulance.
Wreckage from the crash is still visible in the shallow waters near the coast, but the exact cause of the accident remains unknown for now.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation and will be working closely with Victoria Police to figure out what went wrong.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the crash or captured it on CCTV or dashcam to come forward. If you have any information, you’re urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
