Ben Carroll has been chosen as Victoria’s next premier after Jacinta Allan resigned as Labor leader following growing pressure within the party, just months before the state election.
The Victorian Labor Party unanimously endorsed Carroll during a caucus meeting on Tuesday. Gabrielle Williams was elected deputy leader and will become deputy premier.
Allan initially planned to contest the leadership but later announced she would step aside, saying avoiding a prolonged leadership battle was in the best interests of the party and the state.
The leadership process briefly became uncertain when senior minister Sonya Kilkenny considered entering the race. However, she later withdrew, clearing the way for Carroll to secure the leadership unopposed.
Carroll is expected to be sworn in as Victoria’s new premier later today.
The leadership change comes after months of speculation, driven by declining opinion polls, internal party concerns and ongoing scrutiny over the state's major infrastructure projects.
With the Victorian election only a few months away, Labor will now look to unite under Carroll’s leadership as it prepares for the campaign ahead.
