South Australia reports surge in bird flu cases

South Australia has recorded seven new bird flu cases, prompting further testing as authorities investigate whether the virus is spreading locally.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said samples from infected seabirds have been sent to a CSIRO laboratory to determine how the virus was transmitted and whether local transmission has occurred.
Most of the new cases were detected along the South Australian coastline, with five birds found at the same location over two days.
Despite the increase in cases, officials say there is no evidence the H5 bird flu strain has entered Australia's poultry or farming industries, and the risk to human health remains low.
Authorities have been closely monitoring migratory and seabirds, with Ms Collins saying Australia had long prepared for the virus's arrival. She also thanked the public for reporting sick and dead birds, which has helped with surveillance and testing efforts.
Investigations are continuing as health and agriculture authorities monitor the situation across the country.
