Labor leaves door open to fuel excise changes as prices rise

The Federal Government has not ruled out extending Australia's fuel excise discount as ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to put pressure on global oil prices.
Resources Minister Madeleine King said the government is closely monitoring fuel costs and will decide whether further relief is needed before the current discount expires at the beginning of August.
The fuel excise was first reduced by 32 cents per litre in April and later extended for another month at a reduced 16 cents per litre.
Ms King said rising oil prices remain a concern for Australian households and businesses, adding that the government is prepared to consider all available options if cost pressures continue.
However, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the current plan is for the temporary fuel tax cut to end as scheduled this weekend.
Treasury has also warned that a prolonged conflict could push fuel prices even higher, increasing inflation and adding further pressure to the economy.
With global crude oil prices remaining volatile, motorists could continue to face higher prices at the pump in the coming weeks while the government weighs its next move.
