Thousands of residents across Victoria have been ordered to evacuate as catastrophic fire danger ratings came into effect on Wednesday morning, prompting heightened emergency responses across multiple regions.
The Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, and South West districts have all been placed under the highest possible fire danger rating, with authorities warning that conditions are extremely dangerous and that any fires that start are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to control.
Emergency services have described the situation as a “very dire” fire day, as firefighters brace for extreme heat, strong winds, and dry conditions that significantly elevate the risk of fast-moving bushfires.
Two major bushfires, burning near Longwood and Walwa, remain out of control. Authorities have confirmed that multiple properties have already been destroyed, although the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed. Worryingly, three people — two adults and one child — remain unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue.
Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to soar again today across both Victoria and New South Wales. Health authorities have issued urgent warnings, urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. People are being advised to stay indoors where possible, remain hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and young children.
Emergency services continue to closely monitor the situation and have urged communities in at-risk areas to remain alert, follow official warnings, and act immediately if advised to evacuate.
