The Global Passport Index 2026 has ranked passports based on more than just visa-free travel, evaluating countries across mobility, investment opportunities and quality of life.
Sweden claimed the top spot with the highest overall score, followed by Switzerland, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands.
Australia ranked 28th, reflecting its strong performance in quality of life and investment potential, while continuing to offer broad global travel access.
Sri Lanka placed 82nd among 197 countries and territories. Although Sri Lankan passport holders still face more visa restrictions than many higher-ranked nations, the country's score was strengthened by factors such as quality of life and investment appeal.
Global Rank | Country | Composite Score (out of 100) |
1 | Sweden | 96.05 |
2 | Switzerland | Top Tier |
3 | Finland | Top Tier |
28 | Australia | High Tier |
82 | Sri Lanka | Mid Tier |
197 | Afghanistan | 23.10 |
Unlike traditional passport rankings that focus only on visa-free access, the Global Passport Index provides a broader measure of citizenship by combining travel freedom with economic opportunities and overall living standards.
The report concludes that the strength of a passport today depends not only on where it allows people to travel, but also on the economic stability, investment environment and quality of life offered by the country behind it.
