AusNewsLanka - News for Australians - Qantas Customers Informed of Stolen Data in Cyberattack
At AusNewsLanka, we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates.

Qantas has confirmed that data from over six million customers was compromised in a cyberattack earlier this week — and affected passengers can expect to find out exactly what information was accessed by next week.

The breach happened on Monday, when a cybercriminal targeted a customer call centre and got into a third-party customer servicing platform used by the airline.

Right now, no one has come forward claiming responsibility or threatening to release the data, and Qantas says it's working closely with authorities and cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident.

The airline has promised to contact impacted customers next week with specific details about what data may have been accessed, and says the information will vary from person to person.

There’s a silver lining:Qantas has reassured customers that no credit card details, passport numbers, or frequent flyer information were exposed in the breach.

“We know that data breaches can feel deeply personal and understand the genuine concern this creates for our customers,” said Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson.“Right now, we’re focused on providing the answers and transparency they deserve.”

Hudson said the airline's cybersecurity teams are working with external specialists, and additional security measures have already been rolled out to protect the compromised system.

“I want to apologise again for the uncertainty this has caused. We’re committed to keeping our affected customers informed with regular updates as our investigation progresses,” she said.

So, if you’re a Qantas customer, keep an eye on your inbox next week — the airline will be sharing tailored information about what, if anything, in your personal data may have been compromised.

In the meantime, no action is needed, but as always with situations like this, it’s a good idea to stay alert to any suspicious emails or account activity — just to be safe.
