Australia Day is being marked across the country with celebrations, ceremonies and community events, as the Prime Minister urges Australians to focus on unity.
Anthony Albanese says the national day is a chance to recognise shared values and the diverse backgrounds that shape modern Australia. He noted the importance of welcoming new citizens while also acknowledging the deep history of First Nations people. Alongside celebrations, Invasion Day protests and a March for Australia are also taking place in some cities.
Sydney
The day began with a dawn First Nations ceremony at Barangaroo. A large citizenship ceremony is set for Circular Quay mid-morning, followed by the popular ferry race on the harbour at midday. Festivities wrap up tonight with a live concert at the Opera House forecourt.
Canberra
The capital hosts the National Citizenship and Flag Raising Ceremony at Lake Burley Griffin. National leaders and award recipients will attend. The program includes aerial displays and a formal salute. Community celebrations continue later at Regatta Point with food and entertainment.
Melbourne
Federation Square is running family-friendly activities throughout the day, including live music, food stalls and big-screen tennis. An official flag event and an open day at Government House are also on the schedule.
Adelaide
Extreme heat has led to the cancellation of some river events and the parade. A morning remembrance ceremony still went ahead.
Perth
Events will finish tonight with a drone and fireworks display over the Swan River, starting in the evening.
Brisbane
South Bank hosts a multicultural food festival this afternoon featuring live performances, cooking demonstrations and interactive activities.
Across the country, the day blends celebration, reflection and public debate about Australia’s past and future.
