If you're on the east coast of Australia, it might be time to dust off the raincoats and umbrellas. A cold Southern Ocean air mass is moving in, and it’s bringing a whole lot of rain, wind, and even snow with it.
Sydney is in for a soggy few days, with forecasters predicting up to 40mm of rain on both Friday and Saturday. And it’s not just the city — some coastal areas in New South Wales could be hit with up to 100mm.
The NSW SES is warning of daily rainfall totals between 50–100mm across parts of the Hunter, Mid North Coast, and Northern Rivers. Winds could also pick up, with gusts over 90km/h possible in some areas.
And get this — snow is even possible above 1000 metres in the central and northern ranges.
“Catchments are still wet from recent weather events,” said SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan, “which means flash flooding and river rises could happen quickly.”
She’s urging people in coastal communities to take the warnings seriously:
“That means planning what you will do and where you will go if you are impacted by severe weather.”
Meanwhile, over in Melbourne, you’re in for a cold stretch too — though not quite as wet. Weatherzone says temperatures in the city won’t climb past 16°C for the next few days.
So wherever you are, it might be best to stay inside, stay warm, and stay informed — especially if you're in one of the high-risk areas.
