Australia has reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with Sri Lanka, expressing deep solidarity with communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah during the visit of Assistant Minister for International Education and for Citizenship, Customs, and Multicultural Affairs, Hon Julian Hill MP.
During his official visit, Assistant Minister Hill met with Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss ongoing cooperation in humanitarian assistance and international education reform. Both sides noted the enduring history of support between Australia and Sri Lanka as regional neighbours who stand by one another in times of crisis and recovery.
A key focus of the discussions was Australia’s commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities for Sri Lankan students, reinforcing its role as a trusted partner in shaping future-ready graduates across the Indo-Pacific region.
Assistant Minister Hill also met with humanitarian partners and UNFPA Sri Lanka staff who are delivering life-saving sexual and reproductive health services to women and girls affected by the cyclone. These efforts form part of Australia’s $3.5 million humanitarian assistance package to support urgent needs and strengthen preparedness through the Regional Prepositioning Initiative.
Australia reiterated that it will continue to stand with Sri Lanka during this challenging period, offering both immediate assistance and long-term support to help communities rebuild and recover.
