The federal government has shifted its approach to artificial intelligence, putting a pause on proposed mandatory guardrails and instead moving to fast-track the rollout of AI across the country.
The original plan aimed to tighten regulations, with ten guardrails in development last year. But the Productivity Commission advised holding off until a full review of existing laws is completed — a move that could help avoid slowing down a potential $116 billion economic boost.
The government has now adopted a more forward-leaning strategy, focusing on unlocking “the full potential of AI” while still managing risks.
The National AI Plan will focus on three areas:
Boosting economic growth
Ensuring the benefits are shared broadly
Keeping Australians safe
To support this, the government will expand digital infrastructure, develop more data centres, and partner with major tech companies. It will also invest in building a skilled AI workforce through training, union consultation, and updated workplace protections.
A new $29.9 million AI Safety Institute, launching next year, will track emerging technologies and advise governments and industry on safety and regulation.
Industry and Innovation Minister Tim Ayres said AI will help improve essential services, enhance education and employment outcomes, and create high-quality jobs.
“This plan ensures technology works for Australians — not the other way around,” he said.
