Australia is set to replace paper passenger arrival cards with a digital system as part of a major upgrade to border processing at international airports and seaports.
Travellers arriving from overseas will complete their customs declaration and travel information online before entering the country, making the arrival process faster and more efficient.
More than 450,000 passengers have already tested the digital system since October 2024 on selected Qantas flights arriving in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The trial is expected to expand to Perth and Adelaide by the end of 2026 before rolling out nationwide over the following 12 to 18 months.
The Australian Government is investing $56.1 million over four years to deliver the new system. Initially, travellers will access the digital form through a webpage, with app-based features planned for the future.
The government says the change will reduce paperwork, speed up border processing, improve data accuracy and strengthen biosecurity by allowing authorities to identify potential risks before travellers arrive.
Officials also say the new system will help airports manage growing passenger numbers ahead of major events, including the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
