A major apartment complex in Melbourne has set a new benchmark for electric vehicle infrastructure, becoming Australia’s largest EV-ready residential building.
The project at Sierra Hawthorn was officially launched on March 18, 2026, by NOX Energy and Energy Minister Chris Bowen.
The development includes 252 EV charging points, covering all 241 apartments and additional shared chargers for commercial tenants. Each resident has access to a dedicated charging point in their parking space.
One of the biggest challenges for EV adoption in Australia has been limited home charging options, especially for apartment dwellers. This project tackles that issue by using smart charging technology that distributes power efficiently across the building—without the need for major electrical upgrades.
The system, powered by NOX Energy, balances electricity demand across all users and tracks usage through a digital billing platform. This allows residents to charge their vehicles conveniently while only paying for what they use.
The installation was completed by ModTech Group, with additional hardware support from MSI.
Charging at home is also significantly cheaper. Residents are expected to save around $2,000 per year compared to running petrol vehicles, making the system cost-effective in a short time.
The project is part of a national rollout backed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, aiming to install 2,000 EV chargers across apartment buildings under the “Driving the Nation” program.
Officials say expanding access to home charging is key to boosting EV adoption, especially for people living in shared residential buildings.
