Sri Lanka Police to visit Australia over Airbus bribery investigation

A joint investigation team from Sri Lanka’s Bribery Commission and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is expected to travel to Australia as part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged USD 2 million Airbus bribery case linked to SriLankan Airlines.
The team will interview witnesses and gather evidence from people believed to have been connected to bank accounts through which the alleged payments were transferred.
According to reports, investigators have informed the court that one individual linked to the investigation, W.D. Nimal Perera, is currently living in Australia.
The investigation also names Priyanka Nayomali Wijenayake, the wife of former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena, and Shamindra Rajapaksa, son of former Minister Chamal Rajapaksa, as key suspects. Both are reportedly overseas, and Sri Lankan courts have already issued warrants for their arrest.
Authorities are investigating allegations that a company was set up in Brunei to facilitate the transfer of EUR 1.45 million (around USD 2 million) in alleged bribes connected to SriLankan Airlines’ purchase of 10 Airbus aircraft in 2013.
The Bribery Commission and the CID are continuing separate legal proceedings as investigations into the high-profile case move forward.
