Sri Lanka Police clarify digital insurance card acceptance and verification

Police officers who refuse to accept valid Digital Insurance Cards and inconvenience motorists will face disciplinary action, Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Control and Road Safety W. P. J. Senadheera has warned.
Speaking at a media briefing on September 3, the DIG said officers at the Padukka and Gampaha Police Stations had reportedly caused difficulties for the public by rejecting Digital Insurance Cards.
Under instructions issued by the Inspector General of Police on May 5, 2026, all police stations must accept Digital Insurance Cards issued by 14 insurance companies approved by the Insurance Regulatory Commission.
The cards are legally recognised under the Electronic Transactions Act No. 19 of 2006.
Police can also verify vehicle insurance through the following methods:
Dial *1338# and enter the insurance policy number or vehicle registration number.
Send an SMS to 1338.
Call the 1338 hotline call centre.
Awareness programmes are being conducted through the Officers-in-Charge of all 607 police stations to ensure officers follow the instructions.
Motorists can complain to the OIC of the nearest police station or contact the Traffic Headquarters special hotline on 070 475 5600 if an officer refuses to accept a Digital Insurance Card.
DIG Senadheera said strict action would be taken against officers who fail to comply with the instructions.
