Millions of Aussies woke up to an icy shock this morning as a polar blast swept across south-eastern Australia, bringing some of the coldest temps of the year so far.
Sydney and Brisbane are both shivering through their coldest mornings of 2025, following what was also Sydney’s coldest day of the year yesterday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Jonathan How.
In parts of southern Brisbane, the mercury dipped to a chilly 11 or 12°C — but that’s practically warm compared to Goulburn in NSW, where it dropped to a freezing -7°C this morning. Yep, you read that right. Minus seven.
Despite the frosty start, How said we can expect a mild and sunny day today in many areas. But don’t pack away your winter gear just yet — more cold weather is on the horizon.
"There’s another polar blast on the way for the weekend," How warned on Today.
Adelaide is in for rain tonight, with Melbourne expecting showers tomorrow. Then things get even colder as the next cold front moves in on Saturday and Sunday, affecting NSW and Queensland too.
While this frosty snap might feel like a bit of a slap in the face, How reassured Aussies that this kind of weather is typical for early winter — even if it does feel like a bit of a jolt after the warmer autumn months.
The longer-term forecast? It looks like we might not stay this cold for long. Despite the chilly start, the rest of winter is expected to bring above-average temperatures overall.
So, while the icy mornings might be giving you second thoughts about getting out of bed, hang in there — the worst of the cold might not stick around for too long.
