At AusNewsLanka, we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates.

One in four international students in Australia are experiencing difficulties with their health and wellbeing, with loneliness emerging as a major concern, according to new research released by Medibank.

The report was developed by Medibank and consulting firm Nous Group, in partnership with six universities. It examines the experiences of international students and identifies ways to improve support across the education sector.

The findings highlight the pressures students face while adjusting to life in a new country. These include managing studies, work, financial commitments and building new social connections.

The research found that loneliness and social isolation can be early signs of more serious health and wellbeing concerns. It also revealed that students who need support the most are often the least likely to access it.

Medibank Executive Overseas Becky Hyde said understanding students’ experiences was essential to ensuring they receive the right support at the right time.

She said international students make an important contribution to Australia’s communities, universities and economy, but often face different challenges from domestic students.

The report recommends three key priorities:

  • Identify students facing difficulties early and provide timely support.

  • Make social connection and a sense of belonging a central part of student life.

  • Improve awareness of available services and make them easier to access.

Nous Group Principal and Global Head of Higher Education Zac Ashkanasy said most international students have positive experiences, but a significant group face several challenges at once.

He said universities already offer a range of support services, but more needs to be done to connect students with the help they need.

The report also highlights the importance of belonging. Students who feel connected to their university and community are more likely to seek help before their difficulties become more serious.

The findings were presented at the Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) in Sydney on Thursday, October 29, with Medibank and Nous Group joining university leaders and students to discuss ways to improve international student wellbeing.
