NSW unveils plan for more homes and jobs across Sydney

Sydney’s eastern suburbs are expected to take the biggest share of new housing over the next 20 years under a new NSW Government plan.
The Sydney Plan aims to accommodate an additional 1.3 million people by 2046, while creating around 800,000 new homes and 950,000 jobs.
Planning Minister Paul Scully said the strategy would focus on building more homes around existing infrastructure rather than continuing to expand into greenfield areas.
Eastern Sydney is expected to see more apartments, townhouses and other diverse housing options. The government says established infrastructure can support higher population growth in these areas.
Western Sydney, meanwhile, will be positioned as Greater Sydney’s major economic and industrial growth zone.
The plan highlights the Western Sydney International Airport, Moorebank Intermodal Precinct and large areas of industrial land as key drivers of future jobs and investment.
The government expects employment in Western Sydney to rise by 59 per cent, from about 475,000 to 755,000 jobs over the next two decades.
The plan also requires councils to maintain enough appropriately zoned land to meet a 30-year housing supply target. The government says this will help prevent future housing shortages caused by lengthy planning processes.
Local Government NSW has backed the long-term approach, saying Sydney needs a stronger pipeline of housing to address the current shortage.
However, the opposition has criticised the plan for providing insufficient detail on infrastructure, schools and public transport.
Sydney, Parramatta and Bradfield City will remain the region’s three major CBDs, while centres including Bondi Junction, Burwood, Hurstville, Castle Hill, Hornsby and Rhodes are expected to accommodate more housing, jobs and services.
The government says the overall strategy is designed to create a more balanced Sydney, with more homes in established areas and stronger economic growth in the west.
