Heavy snow has turned parts of northern NSW into a winter wonderland — but for many locals, it’s been far from magical.
Over the weekend, parts of the Northern Tablelands were buried under up to 40cm of snow, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Towns like Guyra, Armidale, Uralla, and Walcha were blanketed in thick white powder after a pool of icy air swept across the region.
“It was quite heavy at times on Saturday afternoon,” said BOM meteorologist Helen Reid. Even Queensland got a tiny taste, with light flurries across the Darling Downs — though nothing much settled there.
The snow brought picture-perfect scenes, but also chaos. Vehicles were bogged, phone service cut, and thousands of residents are expected to be without power for at least another day.
In Uralla, the Bolt Inn pub became an impromptu shelter on Sunday for people stranded in the cold. “We’re sheltering people on floors and chairs throughout the pub, and with many road closures we are staying safe inside,” the owners wrote on Instagram.
Still, not everyone was hiding indoors. Some locals decided to embrace the snow — including one Guyra resident who was spotted skiing down the slopes of the town’s golf course.
