In the 2025 Australian federal election, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Labor Party achieved a decisive victory, securing at least 87 seats in the House of Representatives—well above the 76 needed for a majority. This win grants Albanese a second consecutive term, marking the first back-to-back Labor government since the 1980s.
The opposition Coalition suffered a significant defeat, capturing only 39 seats. Notably, Liberal leader Peter Dutton lost his own seat of Dickson to Labor’s Ali France, prompting immediate discussions about the party's leadership and direction.
Labor's success was particularly pronounced in Victoria and Queensland, where the party made substantial gains. These results reflect widespread voter support and dissatisfaction with the Coalition’s policies, including their nuclear energy stance and delayed policy releases.
In the Senate, Labor is poised to increase its numbers, enabling the passage of legislation with the support of the Greens. However, the Greens themselves faced setbacks, potentially losing key seats, including that of party leader Adam Bandt in Melbourne.
The election outcome is seen as a mandate for progressive governance and unity, with Labor's campaign focusing on healthcare, wage growth, child services, and green energy initiatives.
