Australia’s car market is undergoing major change, with industry experts warning that Fiat’s import halt and Peugeot’s local withdrawal may be only the beginning.

The growing popularity of affordable Chinese vehicles is increasing pressure on many long-established brands. Experts say intense competition, changing consumer preferences and a crowded market could lead to more manufacturers scaling back or leaving Australia.

Industry leaders believe brands with smaller market shares face the biggest challenge. While market leaders such as Toyota, Ford, Kia, Mazda and Hyundai remain in strong positions, brands including Nissan, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Subaru, Honda, Suzuki, Jeep, Skoda and Cupra are considered more vulnerable if current trends continue.

Dealers say many buyers are now choosing vehicles based on price, technology, warranty and overall value, rather than long-standing brand loyalty. This has helped Chinese manufacturers rapidly expand their presence in Australia by offering feature-rich vehicles at competitive prices.

Motor industry experts also point to Australia's highly competitive open market as a key factor, allowing new brands to enter while making it harder for smaller or less competitive brands to survive.

While established manufacturers are expected to remain important players, industry analysts believe the local automotive market will continue to evolve, with more brands likely to reassess their future in Australia as competition intensifies.
