AusNewsLanka - News for Australians - Australia’s latest population growth figures officially released
At AusNewsLanka, we aim to keep the Australian community informed with timely updates.

Australia’s population increased by 412,500 people during 2025, reaching 27.8 million by the end of December, according to new figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The annual growth rate was 1.5 per cent, with overseas migration remaining the biggest contributor to population growth.

Of the total increase, around 301,000 people came from net overseas migration, while natural population growth the difference between births and deaths added approximately 111,500 people.

Population growth continued to slow from the post-pandemic highs recorded in 2023, with net overseas migration falling compared to previous years.

Western Australia recorded the strongest growth rate in the country at 2.2 per cent, followed by Victoria at 1.7 per cent and Queensland and the Northern Territory at 1.6 per cent. New South Wales grew by 1.2 per cent.

Interstate migration trends showed Queensland and Western Australia remained the most popular destinations for Australians relocating within the country. Queensland gained more than 16,500 residents from other states, while Western Australia attracted over 10,400.

In contrast, New South Wales recorded the largest net loss of residents to other parts of Australia, with more than 21,000 people moving interstate.

Tasmania experienced the slowest population growth, increasing by just 0.5 per cent, or around 2,900 people, over the year.

The ABS population clock, which estimates growth in real time, passed the 28 million mark earlier this month, highlighting Australia’s continued population expansion despite moderating migration levels.
