A devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad has left at least 290 people dead, after an Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner smashed into a doctors’ hostel near the airport, with dramatic images showing the aircraft's tail jutting out from the building’s roof. Police confirmed the death toll includes passengers, crew, and people on the ground.
Of the 242 people aboard, a staggering 241 have been confirmed dead, with only one British passenger surviving the crash — a heartbreaking outcome for what should have been a routine international flight.
The aircraft, tracked by Flightradar24, was part of Boeing’s modern Dreamliner fleet — and this marks the first major incident involving this model. Boeing has since said it’s ready to support Air India during the investigation and recovery efforts.
Air India has experienced a few rare but major accidents over the years, each prompting serious reviews of aviation safety in the country. While India has made strides in improving air travel infrastructure, this tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks that remain.
Authorities are now working through the wreckage, investigating what went wrong, and supporting the families affected by this horrific event.
