The review will take a deep dive into government spending, looking at where processes can be streamlined and whether the public sector needs to return to its pre-pandemic size. If banks pass on the full cut, the average mortgage holder could see their repayments shrink by about $103 a month. If you’ve got a $1 million loan, you’ll save roughly $154. Sounds great, right? Well, not so fast. Many Homeowners Still Struggling According to Finder, if you have an average home loan of $641,416 , you’re still looking at $3,784 in monthly repayments . That’s a huge chunk of change, especially when 1.2 million homeowners are already on the brink of financial stress. The data shows that 37% of mortgage holders need to save at least $500 a month  just to keep their heads above water. Another 14% need at least $1,000 shaved off their mortgage repayments  to avoid drowning in debt. Will More Rate Cuts Help? ANZ economists are predicting just two more rate cuts this year , which would bring the cash rate down to 3.85%. But for some homeowners, that won’t be enough. “This rate cut is a lifeline for millions of Australians teetering on the edge of mortgage default, but for some, it may be too little, too late,” says Finder’s head of consumer research, Graham Cooke. To Save or Spend? So far, 28 banks and lenders , including Westpac, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, and NAB, have committed to passing on the full cut. But here’s something to consider—lower repayments now might actually cost you more in the long run. Canstar research found that if a borrower with a $600,000 mortgage keeps their repayments the same , they could save $89,143 in interest over 25 years  (assuming the RBA continues with standard rate cuts). Authorities in Tasmania are in a desperate race against time to save 90 false killer whales that are still alive after getting stranded on a remote beach in the state’s far northwest. Earlier today, Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment confirmed that a total of 157 whales had been stranded near Arthur River—the first mass stranding of false killer whales in the region in 50 years. At first, rescuers counted 136 whales still alive, but that number has since dropped to 90. Brendan Clark, a liaison officer with Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service, said the whales may have been stranded for up to 48 hours. "Refloating them will be extremely difficult," Clark admitted. "The site is hard to access, the ocean conditions are challenging, and getting specialized equipment to the area is no easy task." While Tasmania has had some success in rescuing stranded whales in the past, Clark warned that the remote location and rough conditions make this case much more complicated. "Animal welfare will be our top priority," he said. A Rare Stranding for the Species Mass whale strandings aren’t unusual on Tasmania’s west coast, but this is the first recorded event involving false killer whales in half a century. Back in 2020, about 470 whales were stranded in Macquarie Harbour near Strahan, and just two years later, another 230 whales became beached on Ocean Beach—only 35 of them survived. As for why this latest stranding happened? That remains a mystery. Marine biologists and vets are currently on-site assessing the surviving whales, trying to determine the best course of action. Queensland researchers have just made a big breakthrough in genetically modified (GM) super-crops, successfully implanting genetic material into plants through their roots for the first time. It might not sound like a huge deal at first, but the team at the University of Queensland believes this discovery could revolutionize the way we grow food. "This is exciting because with further improvement, the technology could potentially be used in the future to produce new crop varieties more quickly," said Professor Bernard Carroll from UQ’s School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences. Instead of spending a decade cross-breeding plants to enhance qualities like flavor, quality, or yield, this new method could speed up the process without the need for traditional genetic modification. Carroll explained that agronomists and farmers already work to improve crops, but the process is slow and expensive. "Traditional plant breeding and genetic modification take many generations to produce a new crop variety," he said. To tackle this, the UQ team used a specially designed nanoparticle—originally developed for vaccine and cancer treatment delivery in animals—allowing plant roots to absorb genetic instructions. "Plant cell walls are much tougher than human or animal cells," Carroll said, so they coated the nanoparticle in a protein that helps loosen the cell walls and get the genetic material inside. Once inside, the nanoparticle delivers an mRNA cargo—similar to how an mRNA vaccine works in humans—to temporarily alter the plant’s traits. "The mRNA we deliver into plants is expressed transiently and then disappears," Carroll said. With UQ’s commercial arm, UniQuest, already patenting the technology, they’re now looking for partners to help develop it further. If successful, this innovation could lead to faster, more efficient crop production—potentially changing the future of farming.
