Weather experts are keeping a close eye on a tropical low off the Queensland coast that could turn into a cyclone in the coming days. The Bureau of Meteorology says Tropical Low "22U" is gaining strength in the Coral Sea, with a 25% chance of developing into a cyclone by tomorrow. That probability jumps to 60% by Monday. While the system is expected to move east or southeast—staying well away from the shore—some weather models suggest it could track as far south as Bundaberg. Forecasters should have a clearer idea of its path by Monday. In the meantime, a strong wind warning has been issued for coastal areas, including Cooktown, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Capricornia, Hervey Bay, and K'gari. Rain is expected in Cairns, Mackay, and Rockhampton today, with possible storms in western and far northern Queensland. Over in Western Australia, another tropical low, "21U," is forming north-west of the Kimberley. It’s expected to stay well off the coast over the next few days. Australia’s biggest super fund, AustralianSuper, has been hit with a massive $27 million fine after failing to merge duplicate accounts for tens of thousands of its members. The Federal Court ruled that between July 2013 and June 2022, more than 90,000 members had multiple accounts that should have been combined. As a result, they were unknowingly paying extra in administration fees, insurance premiums, and lost investment earnings—adding up to around $69 million in losses. Justice Lisa Hespe, who made the ruling, didn’t hold back. “It is inexcusable for [AustralianSuper] to not have had processes and systems in place to ensure compliance with a specific legislative requirement,” she said. The super fund self-reported the issue in 2021 and fully cooperated with regulators. Both AustralianSuper and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) agreed that a $27 million fine was fair, and the judge signed off on it. Justice Hespe also made it clear that this wasn’t just about punishing AustralianSuper—it was about setting an example. “The penalties in this case need to be large enough to deter other superannuation fund trustees from failing to diligently discharge their duties,” she said. AustralianSuper CEO Paul Schroder has since apologized, admitting the fund didn’t do enough to merge accounts as required. “We’ve fixed that now,” he said, adding that affected members have been compensated. With over 3.5 million members and responsibility for nearly 15% of super accounts nationwide, AustralianSuper is a major player in the industry. Despite the federal government’s world-first ban on social media for kids under 16, most young Australians are still online, a new report from the eSafety Commission has found. According to the report, a whopping 80% of kids aged 8 to 12 and 95% of teens aged 13 to 15 were active on at least one social media platform last year. Platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and TikTok still have hundreds of thousands of underage users, despite efforts to keep them out. So how are kids getting around the ban? More than half (54%) access social media through a parent or carer’s account, while 36% have their own account. The ban, introduced in November, relies on users truthfully declaring their age—but as the report points out, that system just isn’t working. Different platforms use different methods to check ages, from AI-driven estimates to language analysis. But the report found no standard approach, with some platforms making serious efforts while others do very little. Reddit, for example, doesn’t even collect age data at sign-up—it simply trusts users to be honest. eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant is calling for stronger, industry-wide rules to protect kids online. “Social media companies must do more, but they can’t do it alone,” she said. “Parents, educators, and policymakers all have a role to play in creating safer digital spaces.” For now, it’s clear that the ban isn’t enough to keep kids off social media. පසුගිය පාලන සමයේ රාජ්‍ය මූල්‍ය අවභාවිතය හේතුවෙන් රට බංකොලොත් භාවයට පත්ව තිබූ බවත් මේ වන විට ජාත්‍යන්තර මූල්‍ය අරමුදලේ (IMF) වැඩසටහනේ පරිවාස කාලයක් යටතේ ක්‍රියාත්මක වන බවත් ජනාධිපති අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක මහතා පවසයි. මෙම තත්ත්වය හමුවේ 2025 අයවැය මගින් ශක්තිමත් සහ ස්ථාවර ආර්ථිකයක් ගොඩනැගීම සඳහා මූලික පියවර ගෙන ඇති බව ඔහු අවධාරණය කළේය. ජනාධිපතිවරයා මේ අදහස් පළ කළේ කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ ව්‍යාපාර පරිපාලනය පිළිබඳ ශාස්ත්‍රපති (MBA) ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය විසින් සංවිධානය කරන ලද 2025 පසු අයවැය සංසදයට කොළඹදී අද (පෙබ 19) එක්වෙමිනි. ණය ප්‍රතිව්‍යුහගත කිරීම තුළින් ලබා දී ඇති තෙවසරක ණය සහන කාලය ඵලදායී ලෙස ප්‍රයෝජනයට ගෙන වසර 2028 වන විට ණය ආපසු ගෙවීමේ හැකියාව යළි ලබා ගැනීම සඳහා විධිමත් ආර්ථික කළමනාකරණයක් ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීම රජයේ අරමුණ බව ජනාධිපති අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක මහතා ප්‍රකාශ කළේය. ලෝකයේ බොහෝ රටවල් බංකොලොත්භාවයට පත්වීමෙන් පසු යථා තත්ත්වයට පත්වීමට දශක ගණනාවක් ගත වී ඇති අතර, ශ්‍රී ලංකාව සැලකිය යුතු කෙටි කාලයක් තුළ යථා තත්ත්වයට පත් වනු ඇතැයි අපේක්ෂා කරන බව ජනාධිපතිතුමා වැඩිදුරටත් සඳහන් කළේය. මෙවර අයවැයෙන් රජයේ ආදායම දළ දේශීය නිෂ්පාදිතයෙන් (GDP) 15.1% දක්වා ඉහළ නැංවීමට යෝජනා කර ඇති බව පෙන්වා දුන් ජනාධිපතිතුමා, හඳුනාගත් ජාතික ප්‍රමුඛතා මත පදනම්ව වියදම්වලට ප්‍රමුඛත්වය ලබාදීමට රජයේ කැපවීම අවධාරණය කළේය. ග්‍රාමීය ප්‍රදේශවලට ආර්ථික ක්‍රියාකාරකම් මෙහෙයවමින් ආර්ථිකය පුළුල් කිරීමටත් පුරවැසියන් ආර්ථිකයේ කොටස්කරුවන් ලෙස ඒකාබද්ධ කිරීමටත් මෙවර අයවැයෙන් අවධානය යොමු කර ඇති බව සඳහන් කළ ජනාධිපතිතුමා එම ප්‍රවේශය තුළින් ජනතාවට ලැබෙන ආර්ථික ප්‍රතිලාභ ඉහළ නංවනු ඇතැයි විශ්වාසය පළ කළේය. “ග්‍රාමීය මට්ටමින් කුඩා ආර්ථික ඒකක ඇතිකර ආන්තික කණ්ඩායම් නැවත ආර්ථිකයට සම්බන්ධ කිරීමට රජය සැලසුම් කර තිබෙනවා. එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් වශයෙන් කුඩා හා මධ්‍ය පරිමාණ ව්‍යවසාය (SMEs) හි ඉහළ යාමක් ඇති කිරීම රටෙහි අරමුණයි,” ඔහු පැවසීය. කර්මාන්ත සඳහා සහය දැක්වීමට රජය දක්වන කැපවීම අවධාරණය කළ ජනාධිපතිතුමා නිෂ්පාදන පිරිවැය අඩු කිරීමෙන් අවසානයේ පාරිභෝගිකයින්ට සහනයක් සැලසෙන බව සඳහන් කළේය. “ග්‍රාමීය දරිද්‍රතාවයෙන් ජාතිය නගා සිටුවීම සඳහා මෙවර අයවැයෙන් වැඩිම ප්‍රතිපාදන වෙන්කර තිබෙන්නේ අධ්‍යාපනයට. රේඛීය අධ්‍යාපන ආකෘතියක සිට වඩාත් විවිධාංගීකරණය වූ බහු දිශානුගත ප්‍රවේශයකට සංක්‍රමණය වෙමින් පාසල් පද්ධතිය තුළ මානව සහ භෞතික සම්පත් යන දෙකම ප්‍රතිව්‍යුහගත කිරීම මෙම ආයෝජනයේ අරමුණයි. “රාජ්‍ය වියදම් කළමනාකරණයටත් අයවැයෙන් ප්‍රමුඛත්වය දෙනවා. රාජ්‍ය සේවා සැපයීම හා සම්බන්ධ අධික පිරිවැය සැලකිල්ලට ගෙන, රාජ්‍ය ආයතනවල වියදම් පිළිබඳ පුළුල් සමාලෝචනයක් පැවැත්වීමට රජය අදහස් කරයි. දූෂණයෙන් තොර දේශපාලන අධිකාරියක් පවත්වාගෙන යාමේ වැදගත්කම අවධාරණය කළ දිසානායක ජනාධිපතිවරයා අල්ලස ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කරන සංස්කෘතියක් පෝෂණය කිරීම පුරවැසියන්ගේ සාමූහික වගකීමක් බව අවධාරණය කළේය. “අපනයනය මත පදනම් වූ ආර්ථිකයක් ස්ථාපිත කිරීම සඳහා රජය නව වෙළඳ ගිවිසුම් අත්සන් කිරීමට සැලසුම් කර ඇති අතර මේ වසරේ ඉහළ අපනයන ආදායමක් අපේක්ෂා කරයි. මීට අමතරව, වත්මන් පරිපාලනය අවධානය යොමු කර ඇත්තේ වරාය කේන්ද්‍ර කරගත් ආර්ථිකයක් සංවර්ධනය කිරීමට ය. කාර්යක්ෂම ප්‍රතිනැව්ගත කිරීමේ මධ්‍යස්ථානයක් පිහිටුවීම කෙරෙහි අයවැයෙන් විශේෂ අවධානයක් යොමු කර ඇත. "අනුරාධපුරය, යාපහුව සහ යාපනය වැනි ප්‍රධාන නගර ප්‍රධාන සංචාරක ගමනාන්තයන් ලෙස සංවර්ධනය කිරීමට සැලසුම් කර ඇති නගර සන්නාම වැඩසටහන් හරහා සංචාරක ප්‍රවර්ධන වැඩසටහන් තවදුරටත් ශක්තිමත් කෙරෙනු ඇත," ඔහු පැහැදිලි කළේය. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ආර්ථික අවස්ථා පුළුල් කිරීම සඳහා රටේ රාජ්‍ය තාන්ත්‍රික සේවය ප්‍රයෝජනයට ගැනීමේ අවශ්‍යතාව ද ජනාධිපති අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක මහතා අවධාරණය කළේය. මෙම අවස්ථාවට ලංකා වාණිජ මණ්ඩලයේ සභාපති සහ ජනාධිපතිගේ ආර්ථික කටයුතු සහ මූල්‍ය පිළිබඳ ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ උපදේශක දුමින්ද හුලංගමුව, කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ MBA ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමයේ ශාස්ත්‍රපති සුරාජ් රදම්පොල යන මහත්වරු ඇතුළු විද්වතුන් සහ ව්‍යාපාරික ක්ෂේත්‍රයේ ප්‍රවීණයන් රැසක් සහභාගි වූහ.
