Here's everything you need to know about this rare astronomical event: What is a Blood Moon? It might sound spooky, but a blood moon  is just a total lunar eclipse . This happens when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, blocking sunlight from hitting the moon's surface. But here's the cool part: some light still gets through the Earth's atmosphere, and it appears orange or red . This is because only the longer wavelengths of light can make it through without scattering, giving the moon that eerie, red glow. Even though the term "blood moon" isn't officially recognized in science, it’s commonly used to describe those lunar eclipses where the moon is bathed in that haunting red light. What is a Lunar Eclipse? A lunar eclipse  happens when the moon moves into the Earth's shadow, causing it to become partially or fully darkened because sunlight can't reach it. There are different types of lunar eclipses: Penumbral : A subtle dimming effect. Partial : Only part of the moon is dimmed. Total : The whole moon becomes dark and may appear red (this is the "blood moon" you're looking for!). Central : A rare eclipse where the moon passes through the center of the Earth's shadow. Selenelion : A really rare type where both the sun and the eclipsed moon are visible in the sky at the same time. The best part? Unlike a solar eclipse , you can watch a lunar eclipse with the naked eye, so no special glasses are needed! How Rare Is a Blood Moon? Total lunar eclipses are rarer than other types, like penumbral  or partial  lunar eclipses. The last blood moon  was in November 2022  and was visible in Australia. After this one, the next total lunar eclipse will be on September 7 and 8, 2025 . When is the Best Time to See the Blood Moon? The blood moon  will appear on Friday night , lasting anywhere from 55 to 80 minutes , but keep in mind that it might not be visible in full in all parts of Australia because it will start before the moon has risen in some cities. The best time to view the blood moon will be at moonrise , as the eclipse will likely finish shortly after. For months, it seemed like Australians would be heading to the polls on April 12. But then Tropical Cyclone Alfred  swept in and changed everything. What Happened? April 12 was the frontrunner for the federal election because it was a perfect "Goldilocks" date. It was: Far enough from the WA state election. Early enough to avoid the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends. An option that would avoid the need for an early budget. But Cyclone Alfred threw a spanner in the works. To call an election, the Prime Minister needs to be in Canberra, and with communities in South-East Queensland  and Northern NSW  dealing with floods, it wasn’t a good look for Anthony Albanese to leave Brisbane. The last possible Sunday to call an April 12 election was March 9 , and Albanese confirmed he wouldn’t be calling it then. “I have no intention of doing anything that distracts from what we need to do,”  he said. “This is not a time for looking at politics.” So, When Is the Election? With April 12 out of the picture, the next available dates are: May 3 May 10 May 17 April 19 and April 26 are out because they fall during the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends. What’s the Government Saying? Albanese and his ministers have been tight-lipped about the election date. Even when April 12 seemed like a lock, they wouldn’t confirm it. Back in January, when asked about a mid-April election, Albanese said: “Well, May 17 is when the election will be, or before... good try there, I'll give you points for effort.” Treasurer Jim Chalmers  has also emphasized that they’re focusing on delivering the March 25 budget , a timeline that wouldn’t have worked with an April 12 election but is now very much in play. “Regardless of the decision the Prime Minister takes, an election is more or less imminent,”  Chalmers said. Why Is May 17 the Latest Possible Date? Australia's Constitution has some pretty specific rules about election timing: House of Representatives terms  run for three years. An election must be held no later than 68 days  after those terms expire (July 25, 2025). The last possible Saturday within that window is September 27 , but we’ll go to the polls much sooner due to the Senate’s timeline . Half of the senators' terms end on June 30, 2025 , and elections for those seats have to happen in the previous year. Considering all the technicalities, the latest possible date for a House of Representatives and half-Senate election  is May 17, 2025 . What Do Interest Rates Have to Do With It? Before the RBA  cut interest rates on February 18 , many thought the government was waiting for a rate cut before calling the election. The rate cut brought some positive economic news after years of rising costs, and that gave Albanese a boost. But RBA Governor Michele Bullock  made it clear that a second cut isn’t likely anytime soon. If there was a chance of more relief, the government might have delayed the election to capitalize on that momentum. What About a Double Dissolution Election? A double dissolution  (where both houses of Parliament are dissolved, and all seats are up for grabs) isn’t happening. The last chance for that was January 24 , and the government managed to pass a significant amount of legislation at the end of 2024, eliminating the possibility. Double dissolutions are rare in Australia—only seven  have happened in history, with the most recent in 2016 . Bottom Line With May 17  looking like the latest possible date, and economic conditions  playing into the decision, it seems the countdown to the election is well and truly on. Now it’s just a matter of when Albanese makes it official!

If you’ve been hit hard by Tropical Cyclone Alfred, there’s some support on the way. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that those eligible can apply for the government’s Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) . Applications will open tomorrow at 2 p.m. via the myGov  website. “The recovery in this is going to take a long time,”  Albanese said, acknowledging the tough road ahead for many. What’s the Disaster Recovery Allowance? The DRA  is a short-term income support payment designed for people who can prove they’ve lost income due to a disaster. It’s available for up to 13 weeks and covers employees, small business owners, and farmers who’ve lost their livelihood. How Do You Apply for It? If you need to apply, here’s how to get started: Log into myGov  and make sure your Centrelink account is linked. On the Centrelink  homepage, choose: ‘Make a claim’ Then ‘Help in an emergency’ Finally, ‘Apply for Disaster Recovery Allowance’ If you need help, you can also call Centrelink’s Emergency information line. Who Can Apply? You need to be: An Australian resident  or a specified visa holder. 16 years or older . Able to prove that your income was directly affected by the disaster . When you apply, expect to answer a series of eligibility questions. How Much Will You Get? The DRA  is paid at the maximum equivalent rate  of JobSeeker Payment or Youth Allowance, depending on your circumstances. It’s not a lump sum—payments are made fortnightly for up to 13 weeks  from when your income started to drop. But there’s more help available! Other support includes: Lump sum income support payments . Financial hardship payments. A three-month pause  on any Centrelink debt . Additional Support in Queensland and NSW Queensland has announced an Emergency Hardship Assistance (EHA)  grant: $180 per person , up to $900 for a family of five or more . It’s to help with essentials like food, clothing, medical supplies, or securing temporary accommodation. To qualify, you must live in an eligible area, be facing hardship, and be unable to meet immediate essential needs . New South Wales is also expected to roll out disaster grants  soon, so keep an eye out if you’re in that area. When the Reserve Bank cut the official cash rate by 25 basis points last month, mortgage holders were quick to get some good news: lower home loan rates. But savers? Not so much. While home loan borrowers are getting some relief, savers are facing a different story. Lower savings rates mean you’ll earn less interest on the money sitting in your bank account—ouch. This comes after a period where savers were actually enjoying decent returns, following the rock-bottom rates during the pandemic. Did All Lenders Pass on the Rate Cut to Borrowers? Surprisingly, no. Out of all the lenders, 66 have cut rates for mortgage customers on at least one of their variable loans. But Virgin Money decided to break from the pack. It won’t be passing on the cut to its home loan customers, though it will lower the interest rate on savings accounts from April 2. Virgin’s spokesperson said their decision was about balancing competitiveness with funding costs and stakeholder needs. But consumer experts, like Graham Cooke from Finder, found the move "very surprising" given how most lenders rushed to drop their rates. Virgin Money, which is owned by the Bank of Queensland (BOQ), saw a dip in retail home lending growth in 2024. Cooke speculated that BOQ might want to focus more on business lending instead. And hey, a few other lenders still haven’t announced their plans, so there could be more surprises ahead. What’s Happening with Savings Rates? If you’re a saver, the news isn’t great. According to financial comparison site Canstar, 51 banks have cut at least one of their savings rates since the Reserve Bank’s February decision. Most of these cuts were the full 0.25 percentage points. Sally Tindall from Canstar explained it bluntly: "Banks cut savings rates to recoup the cost of cheaper mortgages." And not all cuts are equal—some banks reduced their base savings rates, while others cut their bonus rates. How High Are Savings Rates Now? The best ongoing savings rate you can get right now is 5.4%, but it comes with a catch—there are monthly terms and conditions you’ll need to meet. Canstar’s data shows eight banks offering ongoing savings rates above 5%, but again, you’ll need to jump through some hoops to get those rates. Tindall advised that a competitive rate is anything above 4.75%, while a highly competitive rate is over 5%. What About Home Loan Rates? For home loans, things are looking better. There are 32 lenders offering at least one variable home loan rate under 5.75%. “If you’re an owner-occupier, paying principal and interest, a good rate starts with a 5, not a 6,” said Tindall. Most lenders passed on the full 25 basis points cut, but there’s a catch. Some lenders treat new and existing customers differently, meaning new borrowers might score better deals than those with existing loans. More Rate Cuts on the Horizon? Maybe, but not right away. The Reserve Bank dropped the cash rate to 4.1% in February, and economists are predicting more cuts this year. The big four banks are split, with ANZ expecting one more cut, while CBA, NAB, and Westpac predict up to three more cuts. However, the latest minutes from the RBA meeting and comments from the RBA governor suggest more cuts might not come immediately. So, if you’re a saver, it might be worth keeping an eye on your bank statements—and if you’re a borrower, maybe it’s time to shop around for a better deal.
