Good news for Aussies— inflation has eased again , just in time for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)  to consider its next interest rate decision . Fresh data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)  shows inflation slowed to 2.4%  over the 12 months to February. That’s down from 2.5% in January  and well within  the RBA’s target range. A couple of key inflation measures also dropped: CPI (excluding volatile items and holiday travel)  fell from 2.9% to 2.7% Trimmed mean inflation  (the RBA’s preferred measure) also dropped to 2.7% This is the lowest inflation  has been since October , and the trimmed mean is back to levels we last saw in late 2021 . So what does this mean for interest rates ? The RBA is set to make its next decision on April 1 , but most experts believe a rate cut next week is unlikely —especially since these are monthly figures  (quarterly CPI, which carries more weight, won’t be released until late April). Before today’s inflation update, economists were 92% certain  the cash rate would stay put at 4.10%  next week. That hasn’t really changed, but the numbers do  make the case for a potential rate cut in May . Market analyst Josh Gilbert (eToro) weighed in: “There’s unlikely enough in today’s release to force the RBA’s hand next month, but it does set the stage for a May rate cut.” The biggest price increases  last month came from: Housing  → Up 1.8% Food & drink  → Up 3.1% Alcohol & tobacco  → Up 6.7% On the bright side, energy prices  are continuing to drop , helped by government rebates . In fact, electricity prices fell by 13.2%  in the past year—without rebates, the drop would have been just 1.2% . And speaking of rebates, the federal government just added $1.8 billion  to the budget to extend them until the end of the year . So while we’re not quite at the point of interest rate cuts , inflation is definitely trending in the right direction . Now, all eyes are on April’s quarterly CPI data —that’s when we’ll get a clearer picture of where things are heading.

A mysterious  bundle of cash has washed up on a NSW south coast beach , leaving locals scratching their heads—and scrambling into the water! It all went down at Kendalls Beach in Kiama  around 1:20 pm on March 20 , when residents spotted a bag of cash  and banknotes floating in the surf . Naturally, curiosity (and maybe a bit of excitement) took over, and people started diving in. Local Anna Tydd  told The Bugle  that when she arrived, there were way  more swimmers than usual. Turns out, her friend Ian  had just returned from the water, goggles on, saying: “They’re swimming for money.” Yep—you read that right. According to Ian, $100 notes  were just floating  around in the surf, and one swimmer even emerged with a rolled-up wad worth about $1000 ! Where did the cash come from? No one knows. Locals speculated it could  be linked to drugs or even be counterfeit, but there’s no confirmation yet. Tydd did the responsible thing and reported it to police , who are now investigating. A quick legal reminder— keeping found money without trying to return it can be considered theft or larceny  under NSW law. The old “finders keepers”  rule might  apply, but only if you make a genuine effort to track down the owner or hand it over to the cops. Australia’s federal debt is about to hit a record high , with the government set to unveil a budget that reflects a worsening structural deficit . Treasurer Jim Chalmers  is still selling it as a win, though, pointing out that debt will hit $940 billion in 2024/25 —a big number, but still $177 billion lower  than what was projected before the last election. He says this means taxpayers will avoid $60 billion in interest payments  over the next decade . “We’re paying down Liberal debt  and saving taxpayers tens of billions ,” Chalmers said, calling it the biggest budget turnaround  in Australian history. Australia’s Debt: Still Low Compared to Other Countries While a near-trillion-dollar debt sounds huge, it’s worth noting that Australia’s debt is still relatively low compared to other countries. Right now, it's just over a third  of the economy. By comparison: UK debt is nearly the same size as its economy US debt has blown past 120% of its GDP But that doesn’t mean we’re in the clear. With defence, health, aged care, the NDIS, and interest payments all increasing , economists warn that Australia’s debt will continue to grow , peaking at 37% of GDP . The Budget's Hidden Reality Labor is pointing to $95 billion in savings  across its last four budgets, claiming it has helped turn things around. But some economists—like Chris Richardson —are saying, not so fast . He argues that most of the budget’s improvements are thanks to external factors , like higher-than-expected tax revenue from commodity prices . In fact, he says government decisions have actually slowed down what could have been an even bigger  improvement. Meanwhile, Deloitte Access Economics  is warning that Australia’s tax system is outdated and might not be able to keep up with rising spending. Partner Stephen Smith  says, “We may need to raise more tax  in the future just to keep up.” The "Off-Budget" Spending Trick Another thing to watch: off-budget spending . This is when the government classifies certain spending as an “investment” instead of a budget expense—basically, moving money off the books . For example, two major spending commitments won’t show up in the underlying deficit : $2.4 billion to bail out the collapsed Whyalla steelworks $16 billion in student HECS debt forgiveness According to Deloitte, these kinds of “off-budget” measures will total around $99 billion  over the next four years. What’s in the Budget? While this budget isn’t packed with huge spending splurges , there are still plenty of key commitments, mostly focused on cost-of-living relief, health, and infrastructure . Health $8.5 billion  over four years to expand bulk billing rates  to 90%. $689 million  to cut PBS medicine costs  from $31.60 to $25 . $644 million  to open 50 new Medicare urgent care clinics . Cost of Living $1.8 billion  to extend energy bill rebates  (saving households $75 per quarter ). $95 million  in lost revenue from a freeze on draught beer excise  (cheaper beers at the pub). Housing $800 million  to expand the Help to Buy  scheme (raising income and price caps for homebuyers). Infrastructure & Transport $7.2 billion  for Bruce Highway upgrades (QLD) . $2 billion  for a new rail hub  at Sunshine (Melbourne’s west). $1 billion  to secure a rail corridor from Western Sydney Airport  to Macarthur/Leppington. $125 million  to upgrade Donnybrook Rd & Mitchell St intersection (Melbourne’s outer north) . Education $2.8 billion  in funding for Queensland schools . $16 billion  in HECS debt forgiveness , but it’s off-budget  so won’t officially impact the deficit. Defence $1 billion  in existing defence funding brought forward  to boost military capability . Disaster Recovery $1.2 billion  to help southeast Queensland & northern NSW  recover from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred . This budget is all about careful balancing —Labor is spending big while trying to keep debt under control . But with rising costs in health, defence, and welfare, the big question remains: Can Australia’s tax system keep up, or will we need to pay more in the future?

Queensland is getting absolutely drenched right now, and a wild satellite image shows just how extreme it is—the entire state is covered in cloud! Parts of the outback are bracing for even more rain after days of heavy downpours, with up to 150mm  expected in the next 24 hours. According to meteorologists, some towns are seeing rainfall numbers that usually take a whole year  to rack up—all in just a few days. Alderley Station  copped 201mm  in just 24 hours—that's two-thirds  of its annual average (which is around 300mm). Birdsville  has had 110mm  in three days—its yearly average is only 157mm . Paluma (Far North QLD)  recorded 124mm  overnight. Quilpie (Channel Country)  and Malboona (Central West QLD)  both saw over 110mm . With this much rain, flash flooding is a serious risk. The Bureau of Meteorology  has issued a severe weather warning  across the Central West and Channel Country , warning that some areas could see up to 200mm in just 24 hours . The Bulloo River  is on major flood alert , and towns like Longreach, Quilpie, Windorah, Isisford, Barcaldine, and Winton  could all be affected. And while conditions are expected to ease a little  from tomorrow, the rain isn’t done yet. Most of Queensland will see 50mm to 150mm , while some outback regions could get up to 300mm  before things finally calm down early next week. Meanwhile, Western Australia is having the opposite problem—a late-season heatwave  is keeping the southwest baking . Perth  and surrounding areas will see 35°C+  temperatures for most of the week. Labor is talking up another $720 million in savings  from cutting back on private consultants—part of a bigger $2.1 billion in budget savings  set to be announced on Tuesday. It’s all part of a push to bring more work back into government departments, with Finance Minister Katy Gallagher  saying this approach has saved $4.7 billion  so far during Labor’s first term. Her argument? It’s cheaper to use public servants than to outsource everything —and that means more money for things like cost-of-living relief, Medicare, and housing . But here’s the catch: these savings are nowhere near  the amount of new spending  in the budget. For example, Labor is rolling out: $8.5 billion  for bulk billing  (to make seeing a doctor cheaper) $1.8 billion  to extend energy bill relief On top of that, some of the so-called savings aren’t really savings at all—they’re just “re-prioritisations” , meaning the money gets shifted to something else within the same department. How’s It All Getting Paid For? Treasurer Jim Chalmers  has hinted that Tuesday’s budget will look pretty similar to the one in December , meaning the gap between spending and cuts  is likely to be filled by higher-than-expected tax revenue . What’s the Coalition Saying? They’re basically matching most of Labor’s spending , plus throwing in: $5 billion for housing infrastructure A big (but unspecified) taxpayer bill for nuclear power plants —which could easily top $100 billion Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor  is promising that, overall, the Coalition will spend less than Labor —but they’re keeping the full details under wraps until closer to the election . The “Secret Cuts” Debate Taylor has also pledged to cap government spending  so it doesn’t grow faster than the economy. On paper, that sounds reasonable, but Labor is warning it could mean hidden cuts to key services  like: NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) Aged care Health Defence Labor is especially hitting back over the NDIS , which has already seen its growth rate shrink from 14% to 8%  under new rules (with Coalition support). Treasurer Jim Chalmers  is accusing the Coalition of having no real plan, saying their approach would be terrifying for people who rely on the program . Big Issues: Defence, Energy & Health Defence : Labor isn’t planning to increase  spending in this budget after boosting it last year, but the Coalition hasn’t ruled out more funding. Energy : The Coalition has backflipped  and is now supporting Labor’s energy bill relief , even though Peter Dutton  is still blaming Labor for failing to lower power prices. Nuclear Power : The cost of the Coalition’s nuclear plan is anyone’s guess . Their own modeling says the total system cost could hit $331 billion , but Taylor insists a lot of that would come from private investment . Health : Both sides are backing key Medicare changes like $25 medicines  and bulk billing incentives . The Coalition is also promising to bring back 10 extra subsidized mental health therapy sessions , which Labor cut. But they’ve been quiet on Labor’s 50 new urgent care clinics , instead announcing four of their own —all in marginal seats . This budget is shaping up to be a pre-election showdown , with both sides claiming to be the more responsible spender. Labor is betting that voters will appreciate its cost-of-living relief, while the Coalition is promising big projects like nuclear power —but without all the details on how they’ll pay for them. One thing’s for sure: we’re in for a long political fight  over who can manage the budget better.
