That said, South Africans do make up a sizable migrant community in Australia — they’re the seventh-largest, making up about 0.8% of Australia’s population. Still, Trump stuck to his claims, saying white South African farmers’ land is “valueless” and that thousands want to escape. They've just launched what's called a “super complaint” to the ACCC, the consumer watchdog, accusing energy retailers of using sneaky tactics to keep customers in the dark and overpaying. The ACCC now has 90 days to respond. So what’s going on? According to CHOICE, some energy companies are playing a tricky game — creating new, cheaper electricity plans but giving them the exact same name as existing ones. That way, when customers get a "better offer" notice, they might not realise it’s actually a different, more affordable plan. And because of that confusion, many don’t bother switching. CHOICE says this little trick is costing Aussies big — on average, $171 a year, and up to $588 for some households. All up, they estimate consumers are losing out on a massive $65 million. “The idea seems to be to keep people as confused as possible,” CHOICE said. And it’s not just a few people missing out. A recent ACCC report found that 4 out of 5 Australians aren’t on their retailer’s best deal. That’s a huge chunk of the population overpaying on their energy bills. “It shouldn’t be this hard to know if you’re being ripped off,” said CHOICE CEO Ashley de Silva. “We’re calling on the ACCC to take strong court action to stop these dodgy practices.” But the energy retailers aren’t copping the blame without a fight. The Australian Energy Council (AEC) — the group that represents electricity retailers — hit back, saying CHOICE has it wrong. CEO Louisa Kinnear pointed the finger at the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), which actually sets the rules around what wording retailers can use on bills. Retailers, she said, tried to get the rules changed three years ago but were shut down. “The AER decides the wording of those ‘better offer’ messages,” she explained. “Retailers have been in ongoing discussions with them to make things clearer for customers.” In fact, back in 2023, the AEC even told the AER that there wasn’t solid proof the current system wasn’t working — that is, they didn’t think the “better offer” messages were failing to help people find better deals. Speaking to reporters this morning, Minns said the body of a man had been found inside a flooded home in Moto, calling the situation “devastating” for his family and the wider community. “We’re bracing for more bad news in the next 24 hours,” he warned. Three more people are still unaccounted for: A 60-year-old woman from the Dorrigo area, A 25-year-old man believed to have driven into floodwaters near Wauchope, and A 49-year-old man who may have walked into rising water. And it's not just the tragic loss of life—thousands of homes have been damaged, and more rain is on the way. Up to 300mm of rain is expected in some areas over the next 24 hours. Emergency Response Ramps Up About 2,500 emergency personnel and 500 emergency vehicles, including boats and helicopters, have been deployed. The SES has already carried out over 500 flood rescues, mainly in the Hunter and Mid North Coast. “We’re still rescuing people who have driven into floodwaters,” SES Commissioner Michael Wassing  said, urging the public to stay off roads  and follow all evacuation warnings . "One-in-500-Year" Flood Event Andrew Gissing from Natural Hazards Research Australia said the event is likely a one-in-500-year flood—the worst on record for the area. The NSW prison population has hit its highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic, and new data reveals one particularly concerning trend behind the rise. According to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR), the number of adults in prison across the state reached 13,103 in March 2025—the most since March 2020, when the pandemic began. During COVID, prisoner numbers dropped sharply and stayed relatively low through to late 2023. But since November 2023, that trend has reversed, with the prison population jumping by 1,055 inmates—or 8.8%. One of the most troubling aspects of this increase? A significant rise in unconvicted Indigenous prisoners. BOCSAR revealed that, as of March 2025, there were 4,244 Indigenous adults in custody, making up about 32% of the total prison population—despite Indigenous Australians accounting for only 3.4% of the state’s overall population. This spike is being driven largely by a rise in Indigenous people on remand—those being held in custody while they await their day in court, not yet convicted of a crime. Over the last five years, the number of Indigenous remandees has jumped 63%. One major factor behind the increase? Domestic violence-related arrests, which have more than doubled over the same period. “Unlike the overall prison population, which is still below pre-pandemic levels, the number of Aboriginal prisoners has now surpassed 2019 levels  and is continuing to grow,” said BOCSAR executive director Jackie Fitzgerald . Fitzgerald warned that the numbers paint a worrying picture, especially in light of national commitments. “These figures underscore the urgent need for policy changes  and better intervention strategies to reduce Aboriginal incarceration,” she said.“Current trends are completely out of step with the Closing the Gap target  of reducing Indigenous over-representation in the justice system by at least 15% by 2031 .” In short, while NSW’s overall prison numbers are climbing again, the surge in Indigenous Australians being held without conviction is sparking serious calls for change. Millions of Australians are still in the dark about how much interest they’ll earn on their savings, following yesterday’s cash rate cut by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Right after the RBA announced a 25-basis-point cut, the big four banks wasted no time letting variable home loan customers know they’d be passing on the savings—between May 30 and June 3. But when it comes to savings account rates? Crickets—except from Westpac, which was the only one to say how their savings rates would change. ANZ, NAB, and CommBank haven’t said a word yet, but experts expect they’ll also cut deposit rates soon. “If history is anything to go by, most savings rates will be getting a haircut over the next few weeks,” said Sally Tindall , data insights director at Canstar . Tindall added that while Westpac’s changes might not thrill its savings customers, at least they were upfront about it—unlike the others. “The other big banks should take a leaf out of Westpac’s book and let their customers know what’s coming,” she said. Australians have stashed a record $1.6 trillion in savings accounts as of March, according to APRA—that’s up $8.3 billion in just one month and over $125 billion more than last year. But despite all that money sitting in the bank, interest rates are slipping, and many savers are actually losing ground once inflation is factored in. “With savings accounts returning just around 1.5% , and term deposits averaging only 3.1% , people are barely keeping up with inflation—currently sitting at 2.4% ,” said Mark Zukerman , director at Vado Private . He warned that once cost-of-living support measures end, inflation could tick up again—further reducing the real returns on savings. In April 2025, the average online savings account returned just 1.55%, with one-year term deposits offering around 4% at best, and 3.2% for three-year terms. As Zukerman put it: “Those are not attractive returns.” And the outlook isn’t great either. The market expects another rate cut by August, and at least two more by February, which could bring the official cash rate down to 3.10%. “The May cash rate cut might be a reason to pop the champagne for mortgage holders,” Tindall said, “but for savers, it’s more like a lead balloon.” She added that while a few savings accounts still offer rates starting with a "5", we’re basically clinging to those for dear life. “With most banks still silent on savings rates, no news isn’t good news.
